        What is Kaal Sarpa Dosha?

Kaal Sarpa Dosha is a Vedic astrological condition in which all seven non-nodal planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — are hemmed inside the 180° arc formed by the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. The name comes from Kaal (time) and Sarpa (serpent): the shadowy nodes are visualised as the head and tail of a cosmic serpent that swallows the chart. Classical texts such as Phaladeepika and Bhavartha Ratnakara read it as a karmic intensity marker, not a verdict on success or failure.

        How is Kaal Sarpa calculated?

Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly 180° apart on the ecliptic — they are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the apparent path of the Sun. Their positions divide the zodiac into two halves. We compute the precise sidereal longitude of every planet (using Lahiri / Chitra-paksha ayanāṃśa and Drik-Ganita planetary algorithms), measure its offset from Rahu in the forward direction, and check whether it falls inside the Rahu→Ketu arc. If all seven do, the dosha is full; if one or two slip out, it is partial; if more sit on the returning side, it is absent.

        Types of Kaal Sarpa Dosha

Classical literature names twelve forms, one for each house Rahu can occupy. Each shifts the karmic theme:

        • Anant (Rahu in 1st) — self & identity
        • Kulik (Rahu in 2nd) — wealth & speech
        • Vasuki (Rahu in 3rd) — siblings & courage
        • Shankhpal (Rahu in 4th) — home & mother
        • Padma (Rahu in 5th) — children & intelligence
        • Mahapadma (Rahu in 6th) — enemies & debts
        • Takshak (Rahu in 7th) — spouse & partnerships
        • Karkotak (Rahu in 8th) — longevity & transformation
        • Shankhachud (Rahu in 9th) — fortune & dharma
        • Ghatak (Rahu in 10th) — career & status
        • Vishdhar (Rahu in 11th) — gains & aspirations
        • Sheshnag (Rahu in 12th) — losses & moksha

        Is Kaal Sarpa Dosha harmful?

Not inherently. The dosha intensifies the karmic theme of a chart — life moves in waves of intense effort and unexpected turns rather than in steady increments. Many highly accomplished public figures carry this configuration. Classical remedies are not about cancelling the chart but about consciously working with the pattern.
